Home DIY: Modge Podge Bookshelf

Happy Saturday everyone!

So I’ve been wanting to do some posts about home decorating/ DIY. Last week mom and I were able to turn a boring, plain, cheap bookshelf into a cute, shabby chic style bookshelf to match my room. I thought this would be a great opportunity to finally do a home decorating post!

Mom had this bookshelf in the basement that was just plain wood and had a cardboard backing. She said that we could modge podge it similar to the one she is using in her booth to display items at Simply Treasures LLC in Brownstown (I loved that shelf as well).

Here is the link to their facebook pages:

First, we sanded the entire bookshelf.

We used three different prints of wallpaper to give it more of a mismatch shabby chic design.

We started by modge podging the top of the bookshelf and worked down to the rest of the shelves. You want to put the modge podge down first, then align the wallpaper how you would like, and then cover the wallpaper in more modge podge. This will ensure that it will stay on the bookshelf.

It took us a very long time to modge podge the entire shelf. This product requires a full day to do so make sure you have plenty of time. Good thing is, modge podge dries really fast! And the finished product is adorable 🙂

Here’s a close up of the wallpaper so you can really see the three different designs and how bright it is.

Once we modge podged the entire shelf and it has dried, we painted the sides and the back with a light pink. I wanted it to have more of a vintage/rustic look so we brushed the paint on instead of completely covering it.

After that, we lightly painted over the wallpaper with a dry brush filling in where the wallpaper might have left gaps. Again, this gives it more of a rustic look and isn’t so bright. You can tell from the picture above compared to the ones below how much lightly painting over it toned it down.

Here’s a close up of the same shelf from above, only toned down.

I’m very happy with the finished product! It matches my room so well and all of my books were able to fit on it perfectly!

I’m a huge Harry Potter fan so naturally they have their own shelf (so pumped about The Cursed Child book out!) 🙂

My record player fits perfectly on top of the bookshelf too!
