Gluten Free Angel Food Cake: Aldi Live GFree Product Review

I enjoy baking, although I usually don’t bake desserts from scratch/homemade. I want to share more cooking and recipes on the blog so hopefully I’ll be able to experiment with some homemade goodies 🙂 But for now, I’m sharing Aldi’s Live GFree Angel Food Cake mix. My family shops at Aldi quite a bit because most all of their products are labeled gluten free and lactose free, along with having their Live GFree line of products. Since it’s Celiac Awareness Month, they release special products only during the month of May. Today I baked their angel food cake mix. It is easy to make and taste just like a “regular” (gluten) angel food cake!

*This was not sponsored by Aldi– I just love their gluten free products and want to share them with you all 🙂

The directions are simple and it doesn’t take long to make at all. Since it uses 12 egg whites, we used the egg white beaters from Aldi. Do not oil the pan- the directions do not say to. You want the angel food cake to “climb up” the sides like a regular gluten angel food cake.

While the angel food cake is baking, be sure to check on it while it’s in the oven. It will get pretty high up and look like it will overflow, although ours did not. You will need to loosen the sides, so a rubber spatula works well.

This is what the cake looked like after it was taken out of the pan and turned upside down.

Product Review: Price: $2.29 in our area-super reasonable

Taste: GREAT

Appearance: Good

Cut a slice, top with strawberries and enjoy!

  2. Mine didn’t come out as nice and overflowed. My pan was nine inch and had a wider tube. I also used a carton of egg whites. The carton label showed equivalent to 10 large eggs but the cake mix needed 12. Did you add additional egg whites? I added 1 but wouldn’t have in hindsight.

    1. Ours overflowed a bit. We used a carton of egg whites as well, I believe we did the equivalent to 12 egg whites. Let me know if you try it again & how it turns out!

Want to bake day before event and use with raspberry fool

    1. Hi, thanks for viewing! Yes, I think it should hold up ok if you are baking it the day before. If you’re making a raspberry glaze, I’d advise putting that on right before you take it to the event- otherwise it might get soggy. Hope this helps!

  7. Did you use an angel food pan or a bundt pan? My turned out tasty but it collapsed when I took it out of the pan, ended up getting dark on the top, but I didn’t want to under bake it.

    1. We used a bundt pan! Ours ended up flowing over the pan, but not spilling. Angel food cake is so temperamental sometimes!

    1. I believe the mix is dairy free. I have not tried it vegan/with an egg substitute.

    1. Hi Linda! Oh no! I didn’t know they discontinued it. That is very unfortunate. I enjoy King Arthur’s GF Flour and they have a recipe for one here: √=https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/gluten-free-angel-food-cake-recipe

  12. I love this cake mix. I made it 2x. The 1st time it overflowed a bit, but was still good. This time it didnt overflow. Both times I bake in a large bundt pan. This 2nd time I used carton egg whites, my carton was not full,so I followed the directions on the egg white carton. Needed 1 1/2 cups. So I just added more till I had the correct amount needed. I just wish Aldis carried this cake mix on a regular basis, because I cant find it now.

    1. I agree Janet! I don’t know why Aldi canceled those items but it would be worth reaching out to their customer service!
